What Laikipia is

Is Laikipia a national park?

No. It is a plateau of private, community and group-owned conservancies. No single gate, no single fee — the conservancy fee is usually inside your camp rate, and the landowners set the rules, which is why you can walk and ride here.

Should I go here or to the Masai Mara?

For a first safari, usually the Mara — the density of animals is far higher. For a second trip, for families, or for anyone tired of sitting in a vehicle, Laikipia. Many of the best Kenya itineraries do both.

Will I see the Big Five?

Rhino, elephant, buffalo and leopard, yes, with lion widespread. Density is lower than the Mara and sightings take more work. If ticking the Big Five is the goal, the Mara is the efficient choice; Laikipia is for people who want to do something rather than tick something.

How many nights?

Three minimum, four better. A full-day walk, a proper ride or a fly camp each take a whole day, and you will want a game drive or two as well.

Practical

Health, fitness and logistics

Is malaria a risk in Laikipia?

Lower than in the low-lying parks because of the altitude — mostly 1,700 to 2,000 metres — but not absent. Take your itinerary to a travel clinic. If prophylaxis is a real concern for your family, shaping a trip around the highlands is a legitimate strategy and we will do it.

Do I need to be fit?

For short walks, easy hacks and night drives, no. For a full-day walk or a serious ride, yes. Tell us honestly — the camps assess you on arrival regardless, and being quietly downgraded after paying for a riding safari helps nobody.

Can we drive from Nairobi?

Yes — four to five hours on mostly good roads, past Mount Kenya. Laikipia is one of the few places in Kenya where driving is genuinely competitive with flying, which also makes it easier with children.

Is a Kenya safari safe?

The safari areas themselves are well run, and camps take guest safety seriously. The practical risks are ordinary travel risks: road transfers, sun, stomach upsets and not listening to your guide around animals.

Check your own government’s current travel advice for Kenya before you book and again before you fly, and take out insurance that covers medical evacuation. We will not tell you an area is fine if the advice says otherwise.

Who actually arranges my safari?

This site is a planning guide. When you send an enquiry it goes to Nomad Africa, our partner travel agency in Kenya, who prepare your itinerary and quote and handle the booking, the payments and you on the ground.

You deal with one team from the first email to the airport transfer home.

Not sure Laikipia is right for you?

Tell us what you want from the trip. If the Mara or Samburu would suit you better, we will say so.
